Pilate Keeps The Cross Public
Point: When the creeds name Pontius Pilate, they keep the cross from becoming a private symbol detached from history.
The line is easy to hurry past. In Luke 23, the trial of Jesus is not a mist of religious feeling. It has rulers, accusations, fear of crowds, a governor, a sentence, and an innocent man handed over. 1 Timothy 6 remembers Christ's testimony before Pilate, which suggests this public witness mattered to early Christian memory.
Maybe the name simply locates the event in time. That is already valuable. Christianity does not begin with an idea about suffering but with Jesus suffering in a real jurisdiction. But it seems too thin to treat Pilate as a mere date-stamp. His name also exposes ordinary political cowardice: a ruler seeing innocence and still surrendering truth to pressure. The Passion is cosmic, but it is not vague.
