Baptism As Petition

1 min read 1 Peter 3:21

Today I am trying to hold together two truths without forcing either one to disappear: baptism is commanded, and salvation is grace.

Peter writes that baptism saves us, while immediately warning us not to treat it as mere outward washing (1 Peter 3:21). He calls it an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. That keeps me from treating the sacrament as magic, and it also keeps me from treating it as optional symbolism.

As a learner, I notice how Christians describe this differently. Some speak of regeneration, others of covenant sign, others of public testimony. I want to listen carefully before judging quickly. What seems common is this: baptism belongs to Christ, not to my spiritual performance.

So my prayer is simple: Lord Jesus, make me truthful in repentance, obedient in what you command, and gentle when I speak about differences I am still learning.
